Heavenly Stems & Earthly Branches

The fundamental alphabet of BaZi — Ten Stems, Twelve Branches, and how they build your chart

What Are Heavenly Stems & Earthly Branches

Heavenly Stems (天干, Tiān Gān) and Earthly Branches (地支, Dì Zhī) are an ancient Chinese system for counting and categorizing time. They are also the fundamental language of BaZi — every character you see in a BaZi chart is either a Heavenly Stem or an Earthly Branch.

There are 10 Heavenly Stems: Jiǎ, Yǐ, Bǐng, Dīng, Wù, Jǐ, Gēng, Xīn, Rén, Guǐ. There are 12 Earthly Branches: Zǐ, Chǒu, Yín, Mǎo, Chén, Sì, Wǔ, Wèi, Shēn, Yǒu, Xū, Hài.

When paired sequentially (Jiǎ-Zǐ, Yǐ-Chǒu, Bǐng-Yín...), they form 60 unique combinations called the "Sexagenary Cycle" (六十甲子). Ancient Chinese used these 60 combinations in rotation to record years, months, days, and hours — which is exactly how the "Four Pillars" of a BaZi chart are constructed.

The Ten Heavenly Stems & Five Elements

The Ten Heavenly Stems are grouped into five pairs by element, each pair containing one yang and one yin Stem:

ElementYang StemYin StemImagery
WoodJiǎ (甲)Yǐ (乙)Jiǎ = tall tree; Yǐ = grass & vines
FireBǐng (丙)Dīng (丁)Bǐng = the sun; Dīng = candlelight
EarthWù (戊)Jǐ (己)Wù = mountain; Jǐ = farmland
MetalGēng (庚)Xīn (辛)Gēng = sword; Xīn = jewelry
WaterRén (壬)Guǐ (癸)Rén = river; Guǐ = morning dew

Yang and yin Stems of the same element share the same elemental nature but differ in character. Jiǎ Wood is a towering tree — upright, rigid, ambitious. Yǐ Wood is grass and vines — flexible, adaptive, resilient. This distinction matters significantly in BaZi interpretation.

Earthly Branches & Hidden Stems

The Twelve Earthly Branches also carry Five Elements associations: Yín and Mǎo are Wood, Sì and Wǔ are Fire, Shēn and Yǒu are Metal, Hài and Zǐ are Water, and Chén, Xū, Chǒu, Wèi are Earth.

What makes Branches more complex than Stems is that each Branch contains one to three "Hidden Stems" (藏干) inside it. For example, Yín (Tiger) contains Jiǎ Wood (primary qi), Bǐng Fire (secondary qi), and Wù Earth (residual qi).

These Hidden Stems mean that a Branch's elemental influence isn't singular — it's a blend. This is why Branch interactions in BaZi tend to be more nuanced and layered than Stem interactions. A single Branch can simultaneously carry multiple elemental forces.

The Twelve Branches also correspond one-to-one with the Chinese zodiac animals: Zǐ = Rat, Chǒu = Ox, Yín = Tiger, Mǎo = Rabbit, Chén = Dragon, Sì = Snake, Wǔ = Horse, Wèi = Goat, Shēn = Monkey, Yǒu = Rooster, Xū = Dog, Hài = Pig.

Interactions Between Stems & Branches

Stems interact with Stems, Branches interact with Branches, and Stems interact with Branches. These relationships are the core mechanics of BaZi analysis.

Stem Interactions

Heavenly Stems have two main types of interaction: Combinations (合, hé) — where two specific Stems are attracted to each other and may transform (Jiǎ-Jǐ, Yǐ-Gēng, Bǐng-Xīn, Dīng-Rén, Wù-Guǐ) — and Clashes based on the Five Elements generating/controlling cycle. Stem interactions are considered "visible" and direct.

Branch Interactions

Earthly Branch interactions are more varied: Six Harmonies (六合), Three Harmonies (三合), Six Clashes (六冲), Three Punishments (三刑), Harms (害), and Destructions (破). Branch interactions are considered "hidden" and internal — their effects tend to be deeper and less immediately obvious.

For beginners, the key concept is: "Harmony" (合) represents attraction and fusion, while "Clash" (冲) represents opposition and disruption. Understanding just these two gives you a working foundation.

How They Form the BaZi Chart

In a BaZi chart, the Four Pillars (Year, Month, Day, Hour) each consist of one Heavenly Stem on top and one Earthly Branch on the bottom — giving you eight characters total. This is why it's called "Eight Characters" (八字).

The Day Pillar's Heavenly Stem (called the Day Master) represents you — it's the reference point for the entire chart. The Five Elements relationships between the Day Master and the other seven characters determine the Ten Gods distribution; all the Harmony/Clash/Punishment relationships between the Stems and Branches create the chart's internal dynamics.

Understanding Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches is understanding BaZi's alphabet. With this foundation, more advanced concepts like the Ten Gods, Luck Cycles, and Daily Element Dressing become concrete rather than abstract.
