What Is Qimen Dunjia

People often encounter Qimen Dunjia (奇门遁甲) alongside BaZi and Liuyao and assume they're all "fortune telling." In reality, these three systems serve fundamentally different purposes.

BaZi is a natal chart system — it's calculated from your birth time and reveals your innate personality, life patterns, and long-term trajectory. Your BaZi chart never changes.

Liuyao is a question-based divination method — you cast a hexagram at a specific moment to answer a specific question. Each casting produces a unique result focused on "how will this matter unfold?"

Qimen Dunjia charts the energy field of a specific moment across a Nine Palace grid. It reveals not just the direction of a situation, but also auspicious directions, key player dynamics, and timing rhythms — a multi-dimensional panoramic analysis tool.

In short: BaZi shows "who you are," Liuyao shows "how this matter will go," and Qimen shows "the state of every direction and every player in the current time-space field."

The core of Qimen Dunjia is a Nine Palace grid (corresponding to the Later Heaven Bagua directions), with four layers of information stacked on each palace:

Heaven Plate: Nine Stars

The Nine Stars represent celestial timing forces. Each star has distinct auspicious or inauspicious qualities. Tianfu, Tianxin, and Tianren are generally considered auspicious; Tianpeng and Tianrui lean inauspicious.

Earth Plate: Eight Gates

The Eight Gates represent human affairs. Open Gate, Rest Gate, and Life Gate are the three auspicious gates, favorable for action. Death Gate, Shock Gate, and Injury Gate lean inauspicious. Block Gate relates to concealment; View Gate relates to documents and visibility.

Human Plate: Eight Spirits

The Eight Spirits represent higher-dimensional influences. Chief Spirit is most auspicious; Serpent indicates false alarms; Yin represents secrecy; Harmony represents cooperation; White Tiger indicates danger; Black Tortoise indicates deception; Nine Earth represents stillness; Nine Heaven represents lofty ambition.

Heavenly Stems

The Heavenly Stems represent specific people or matters. In Qimen, Jia (甲) is the most critical element — the "Jia" in "Dunjia" (遁甲, "hiding Jia") refers to it. Jia hides beneath the Six Instruments (Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui), while the Three Wonders (Yi, Bing, Ding) serve as auxiliary forces.

Constructing a Qimen chart is considerably more complex than casting a Liuyao hexagram, but the core logic follows clear steps:

First, determine Yin/Yang Dun and the chart number. Based on the solar term of the casting time, the system determines whether it's Yang Dun (after Winter Solstice) or Yin Dun (after Summer Solstice), then identifies the specific chart number (1-9) based on the upper, middle, or lower period.

Second, lay the Earth Plate. The Six Instruments and Three Wonders are placed into the Nine Palaces according to the chart number's sequence.

Third, lay the Heaven Plate. Based on the hour's Heavenly Stem, the system identifies the Chief Star (the star on duty), then rotates the Nine Stars into their positions following fixed rules.

Fourth, lay the Eight Gates and Eight Spirits. Similarly placed into the Nine Palaces based on the Gate on duty and fixed rotation rules.

Once the chart is constructed, interpretation follows a structured approach:

First, identify the Subject. Similar to Liuyao, you need to determine which Heavenly Stem represents your question. For personal matters, look at the Day Stem's palace; for the other party, look at the Hour Stem's palace.

Then, examine the Subject's palace combination. Is the Star-Gate-Spirit-Stem combination in that palace favorable? Auspicious Star + Auspicious Gate + Auspicious Spirit = very favorable. Inauspicious across all layers = challenging. Mixed combinations require nuanced analysis.

Next, examine inter-palace relationships. Is the Subject's palace generating or restraining other relevant palaces? This determines the direction and resistance of the situation's development.

Finally, synthesize. Qimen's strength lies in its information density — you can simultaneously see timing, direction, people, and situational dynamics. This also means interpretation complexity is higher, requiring balanced consideration of all layers.

Qimen excels at scenarios requiring holistic judgment:

Travel timing and direction — which direction is more favorable? When is the best time to depart? Negotiation strategy — what's the other party's stance and strength? Partnership evaluation — is this potential partner reliable? Project launch — is now the right time?

Qimen is less suited for: simple yes/no questions (Liuyao is more direct for those) or understanding personal life trajectory (BaZi is more appropriate).
